REEFER BEEFER
The four year old Reefer Beefer made his racecourse debut at Worcester on 20th May. Still young and experienced with plenty of growing to do, we were surprised at just how well he performed, running on strongly at the end of the two miles. He will now enjoy a holiday, out in the fields with stable mate Jocheski until returning to training at the end of the summer.

Temperature Loggers

We are pleased to report that the new Sensitech loggers have been universally well received. whilst we shall maintain a stock in the office, we would request that orders for larger amounts are placed with us in good time. software to down load recordings can also be supplied if required.

Market conditions
Volumes of almost all traffic across all shipping lanes remain depressed and freight remain depressed with no immediate signs of recovery. Fuel prices edging up but any increases in BAF largely offset by deterioration in base rates.

Vietnam
In response to the congestion at Haiphong Lines have restricted volumes. This situation looks like remaining indefinitely. Please contact us for full details and / or clarification.

THE MARKET
It would appear that almost all export and import rates of whatever product have continued to fall. Trading conditions this time last year appeared healthy and despite ever increasing fuel prices levels of exports remained buoyant. The complete opposite is true as we embark upon 2009 and it would appear that many belts will need tightening.

TEMPERATURE RECORDERS
We are pleased to be able to supply a new range of one way disposable digital temperature recorders. These can be programmed to measure temperatures on shipments ranging from a few days to an extended voyage. Software to download recordings can  be supplied to either shipper or consignee (or both) and readings can be emailed quite easily.

THE MARKET
The reduced levels of fuel surcharges and recent down turn in shipping volumes continues to ensure downward pressure on shipping rates. Although there has been some more consistency in respect of exchange rates of late it is still difficult on many trades in the current market to justify long term commitments. There is no immediate prospect of any upturn in shipping volumes  and 2009 looks like being a tough one !

USA EXPORT PROCEDURES
New procedures are expected to be introduced next year could effect the timing iro of loading containers for the USA. You may see updates from us in this regard.

RATES
Shipping rates continue to fall, world wide,  in response to a significant down turn in volumes of cargo moving and falling commodity and fuel prices. Long term negotiations and  commitments to freight rates seems pointless at the moment with the "spot" market becoming the norm.

THE MARKET
Shipping Lines and rates reflect the current turmoil in world wide trading conditions. Currency fluctuations and falling oil prices are instigating some drastic changes to the shipping environment and freight rates are like everything else somewhat volatile and has necessitated the renegotion of many deals. Predictions on freight levels are difficult but unlike the past year or so there are certainly no signs of upward pressure.

FREIGHT RATES
Freight rates have stabilised somewhat over recent weeks, though whilst demand remains steady and fuel prices high we continued to see increases in the levels of fuel surcharges. , in response to continued heavy demand and high fuel prices, continue to rise.

FAR EAST RATES
By and large, Lines remain adamant in respect of adhering to proposed rate increases. Further rises in fuel costs also adding to increased costs. Exports do however remain buoyant. Whilst we have fixed several long term agreements, most trade lanes seem to be heading towards a steady increase in shipping rates. These increases are in response to the relatively depressed rates of the past few years. With no immediate signs of a reduction in fuel charges we see rates creeping up for the foreseeable future. Whilst the Far East is the recipient of the most marked rate increases, other trades too, mainly in response to higher operating costs are showing signs steadily rising rate costs.

CONTAINER SEALS

Several Lines have reviewed their policy regarding the distribution of Container seals, particularly the higher security varieties required for shipments to certain Countries. We have stocks in our office which can be despatched, but Customers should ensure they have sufficient stocks to accommodate current loadings. Some Lines reviewing their policy regarding the supply of (especially) high security container seals - eg those suitable for USA markets conforming to C-TPAT / ISO 17712 standards.

This means that drivers will not necessarily be in possession of bolt seal or any seal for that matter) when arriving at store to load. Most Stores of course have a quantity of their own seals but it would be a good idea to check with your loading premises to ensure this is the case. We maintain a stock of seals at our office, but to courier one to a cold store should it be discovered there is none available at the time of loading is of course an expensive exercise. Could I suggest that you check with your Loading premises to ensure that they do indeed have suitable container seals.

Congratulations to The Utterly Marv'lous team who won the November monthly prize, thanks mainly to 33/1 winner Garvivonian who won the Beechers chase - and now a fancy for the Grand National itself.

Current leader (thanks to Harchibalds success over the weekend) is Robats Marauders. (I'm sure he had some inside info). Several entries have fancies for the King George over Xmas (the next bonus race) including current leader Robats Maurauders and 6th placed the Chuckle Girls with the current joint favourites Kicking King and Kingscliff respectively - what an exciting christmas these will have !

Monthly prizes will be awarded for December, January, February and March.

Four teams not off the mark yet, but this is a marathon and not sprint. They shouldnt give up hope even though their selections are a bit useless

RETURN OF BRITISH BEEF EXPORTS ?
For the first time in many years perhaps, there seems the first glimmer for a resumption of UK beef exports. Details a little sketchy at the moment and of course the traditional markets have yet to be re-opened or indeed investigated but as a company largely founded on the export of British Beef, we do of course maintain a great interest.

MARINE INSURANCE
We are pleased to report that our marine Insurance rates have been extended at current levels for the next six months. As an FSA regulated company we are very happy to talk to our customers about their cover and is an area of our business we are looking to promote. we have over many years and many thousands of containers built up a considerable knowledge of requirements when it comes to the specifics of refrigerated shipping and this knowledge and experience is at our customers disposal.

NEW BAF LEVELS, REVISED BAF, INCREASED BAF, FUEL SURCHARGE INCREASE......

These are the titles of so many emails and faxes received almost on a daily basis over recent months. Lines have imposed or increased fuel surcharges on virtually every trade lane, so much so that on Far East dry boxes the levels of surcharges exceed the freight cost itself. The continued increase in fuel prices and the buoyancy of  trade, world wide, therefore, continues to force rates upwards and does nothing for stability.  Many export areas also subject to congestion and similar surcharges, again reflecting an ever increasing flow of cargo. We expect the trend to continue for the immediate future making long term commitments difficult.

Having said that we have seen some easing on the availability of reefers in the traditional demand areas of South America and Australia. As we come into the heavier, European reefer export season, however, we can foresee some shortages in some countries, possibly even the UK. On one hand we should welcome these unprecedented demands on shipping space, but a return to a more stable market place does seem an attractive proposition.

AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS PROCEDURES
Shipments for Australia now subject to more rigorous documentation procedures. Shipments from the majority of our customers already conform to these. The main issues are: Cargo details need manifesting within four days of departing and concise details required for both consignees & notify parties.

USA PALLETTS
Customers are reminded that Pallets destined for U.S. port should be of the treated variety. Although full imposition of the ruling is not until next year, we consider it good practise to make the necessary adjustments now. Many pallet suppliers can provide these.

SPACE PROBLEMS
Whilst reefer equipment remains at satisfactory levels this month, space on vessels are very tight on several trade lanes. Worst effected are vessels to the USA and Canada and we ask that customers book early - Typically there is a two to three week back log.

LAVENDAR COTTAGER
Lavender Cottage is owned by Reefer 90s. As well as accomodating customers from time to time during their visits to our offices, it is let as holiday accomodation throughout the year and Customers are most welcome to make use of this facility if visiting this part of North Essex. Please contact us for further details.

MARKET REPORTR
The general availability of reefer containers World-Wide as improved somewhat over recent months. Regional shortages do still exist, and whilst the heavy demand areas of South America and Australia still have their problems, the situation is not as accute as before.

Freight rates though are somewhat unstable, with surcharges especially fuel surcharges being levied or increased on most trades. Obtaining any kind of extended validity is difficult at the moment.

TL2's
Customers are remineded that we can now isuue pre authenticated T2l's which has greatly improved the service we can offer on those short transits.

TRANSIT INSURANCE
Please do talk to us should you need to discuss cargo insurance. We have tailored policys for both marine and air transit and are always pleased to discuss specific requirements.

REEFER 90s OPEN
Congratulations to Catterdown Al, the new Reefer 90s Open Champion. Despite being a relative newcomer to the game, Alan ammassed a record 44 points finishing 3 clear of the field at the event held over the 1st and 2nd of September in the New Forest.

On the sport front, it has been a pleasure talking to our Australian collegues recently and plans afoot to organise a visit down under next winter to witness our attempt at retaining the Ashes on Australian soil.

MARKET REPORT
There is a welcome easing in box supplies in South America. Rates however are hardening on several trade lanes and surcharges, especially fuel surcharges are rampant !

EDI
The shipping Industry continues its progress into greater use of electronic communications. Customs clearances, bookings and bills of lading are almost exclusively electronic these days. As a Company we appreciate the need to continue our investment in this aspect of our business, but we shall never have an automated answer phone !!!! We are still great believers in the fact that talking to someone is of great benefit. We accept bookings, ammendments and other information in the way our Customer prefers to deliver them.

Our opinion is that the Lines' greater reliance on computer systems has adversley effected their flexibility. Our job, as go betweens is to embrace the necessary and indeed benefitial aspects of EDI, whilst never forgetting that our greatest asset remains our own staff and the wealth of reefer experience we offer.

Market Report

Reefer exports from UK relatively flat. Recent CAF/BAF increases appear to have peaked and reduce demand should see a period of rate stability over the next few months. Local shortages are evident is some parts of Europe, Ireland for example.

Conversely heavy demand for reefers continues from both South America and Australia and here rates are solid and space and equipment remain problematical on several trades.

T2L'S
We are pleased to report that we have received approval to issue pre-authenticated T2L documents.

EXPORT CUSTOMS
Some clearance charges, principally those concerning CAP exports have been reviewed.

Temperature Monitors
Customers are reminded that we can provide recorders that monitor both temperature and humidity, suitable for both sea and air transportation.

Marine Insurance
We are pleased to report that terms and rates have been extended. Should you require Marine Insurance on any shipments please let us know at the time of booking. Our policy has been specifically constructed to cater for the carriage of refrigerated cargo - further information can be found under services/marine insurance (click !!!) or of course please call.

Reefer Situation.
Container and space availability remain extremely tight in many parts of the World but in particular South America and Australia. Local shortages also in several Mediterranean and produce bearing North African Countries. With so much refrigerated cargo being shipped in containers and with produce seasons seeming to merge these days, it seems this demand and therefore shortages of equipment will continue for the foreseeable future. Conversely there are many examples of build ups of empty units in importing Countries with little export requirement and this results in increased repositioning of empty reefers.

Reefer Rates.
Increased freight charges reflect this increase in demand. Last year saw some steady increases in shipping rates though they seemed to level out towards the end of the year. Over recent months however, the upward trend in prices has resumed especially from demand areas. Lines are introducing more tonnage and more equipment to meet demand and increased charter costs due to a shortage of reefer tonnage further evidence the high current demand for reefer traffic. Fuel and Currency surcharges have increased across all trades.

Middle East Groupage Services.
We are trying to increase the frequency of LCL shipment for both chilled and frozen cargo into the Middle East Gulf.

Quay Charges.
Hot on the heels of an almost blanket introduction of plug in and storage charges for imported reefers, we are witnessing a tightening of free time on quay for exports. Around many European ports we are seeing reefer congestion - this again a reflection of the increasing movement of refrigerated containers.

T2L's
In an effort to speed up the issuance of T2L's we are implementing a pre authenticated system that we hope will overcome many of the frustrations resulting from the seemingly unavoidable delay in obtaining such documents following the recent regulation changes.

Jan 2005

REEFER SITUATION
Shortages not so severe in Europe with only local shortfalls. Stock levels in both Ireland and the UK improving. Heavy demand continues in South America, Australasia and South Africa, though probably fair to say that shortages not as acute as before Christmas. Reefer trade continues at and is forecasted to remain at buoyant levels but rates would appear to be levelling out following more or less world wide increases during the latter half of 2004.

NEW WEST COAST USA SERVICE
Following some lengthy investigation and negotiation, we are pleased to report that we can now offer a viable service from the UK to many West Coast destinations, via New York. This will avoid much of the delays experienced with all water transit and therefore reduce transit time significantly. We hope also to, shortly be in a position to offer this service on a consolidation basis.

UK IMPORT CHARGES
Almost across the board lines have introduced plug in charges for imported reefer containers. These vary, but are typically £15-00 per day, with little or no free time.

UK CUSTOMS
Revised charges for UK customs clearance effective 1st March 2005. Some multiple line CAP entries will be effected.

15th ANNIVERSARY
Reefer 90s celebrates 15 years of service this year. To commemorate this occasion we shall be organising one or two events throughout the year - no doubt starting at Cheltenham.

MILDEV - dates Monday 25th to 27th April

REEFER SHORTAGES
Unprecedented demand for reefer equipment, almost World Wide, has lead to shortages in many areas. We had already reported on the shortages in the more traditional demand areas of South America and Australia, but this has widened now to incorporate South Africa and many European Countries and, though to a lesser extent, the UK itself. When seasonal demand is strong, whether it be for Grapes, or Flowers or other produce, then those Countries, with these seasonal flows do struggle to maintain a supply of equipment for non seasonal cargo. This has resulted in many rate increases and this buoyant reefer demand (and dare I say further freight increases) looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.

SURCHARGES
Along with increased freight rates generally, we have seen increases in fuel surcharges this year and increases or introduction of a currency surcharge on many trade lanes in response to the weaker dollar.

MARINE INSURANCE
As of 15th January 2005, your insurer provider or procurer should be affiliated to the FSA. We are pleased to confirm that we have received our approval during November and can therefore continue to provide Cover or advise when requested.

REEFER DEMAND BUOYANT
The World Wide reefer market remains extremely strong, often in despite of historical barriers to good trade, i.e. currency fluctuation. Imports in particular remain buoyant, but as we come into this traditional pre Xmas busy time for exports, we do find shortage of reefers in Europe. Recent and more or less World Wide increases in freight levels reflect this demand. The situation is expected to remain like this for several months.

Oct 2004

REEFER MARKET
Heavy demand continues and reefer equipment remains scarce in the traditional demand areas. We notice that seasonal peaks are really effecting stck levels and shortages of equipment are not uncommon. Demand for bulk reefer vessels seems at an all time high - no doubt suplementing their traditional traffic with that that cannot be carried by container. We are seeing some shortages in Europe too, and as we come up to Christmas we can envisage major shortages in Ireland and even pressure on UK stocks.

PLUG IN CHARGES
We have witnessed a widening in the scope of plug in charge at UK ports, especially for imported cargo. Our arguments that these should have been incorporated into terminal handling charges (which on reefers are more often than not appreciably more expensive than for dry vans) have met with some success but if unsure we advise Customers to get in touch to get the latest charges.

FREIGHT RATES
World Wide demand for reefer shipments (and general cargo for that matter) has remained buoyant for some months now. Shortages of reefer space and equipment are especially noticeable throughout Australasia, South America and many parts of Europe. This has resulted in several rate increases, most notably on meat shipments from South America and Australia. For the foreseeable future the trend looks to continue.

TEMPERATURE RECORDERS
We are able to lease, to customers, recorders that can record both carriage temperature and humidity. Hire rates from 95p per day. We can pre programme them, despatch to loading address and upon receipt from consignee, can download information that will provide a comprehensive report of carriage conditions.

MARINE INSURANCE
Customers attention is drawn to the fact that as from January next year, Companies offering Insurance cover, or indeed advice on Insurance will need to be registered with the Financial Services Authority. (FSA) We are sending circulars to Clients advising of this requirement

EUR 1 FORMS - REMINDER
Customs have introduced changes to the processing of EUR 1’s. From 1st May 2004 these forms will no longer be accepted at local or Port offices. Instead they will need to be sent to Salford. If you would like further information or alternative methods of getting EUR 1’s endorsed please see notice VCCC 03/59 which can be found at www.hmce.gov.uk

May 2004

MARKET REPORT
Reefer rates from Europe generally steady, though weak dollar and high oil prices have seen introductions or adjustments to currency and fuel surcharges. Heavy demand for Australasian and South American meat has lead to shortages of equipment and rate increases from these areas.

NEW EU MEMBERS
The incorporation of several Countries into the EU will effect documentation requirements. There will be a transition period and experience would tell us that dual systems are likely to run simultaneously for a period. New regulations and possible new freight rate structures will no doubt make things interesting over the coming months. If in doubt of new documentation requirements please contact us.

MAGNUM REEFER TRIALS
We are pleased to announce that we have commenced shipments using new Magnum type reefers. Designed to operate at very cold temperatures they would seem ideal for Ice Cream and some frozen fish. They are being introduced in the Southern Hemisphere where greater demand exists for their impressive cooling specification.

Apr 2004

DATA LOGGERS

Clients wishing to monitor the carriage temperature and/or relative Humidity of their shipments can hire our data loggers. The size of a cigarette box they can be placed in with the goods, returned to us after discharge where we can down load information and provide detailed analysis of carriage conditions. Hire costs are typically £60 per trip.

MILDEV 2004
Team Liberty took the 5th tournament by a slim margin and so take a 3-2 lead over Team Reefer. The tournament held at Thorpness Golf Club at the end of April was blessed with glorious weather.

Mar 2004

CHELTENHAM 2005
March next year sees the introduction of a four day Festival. We are looking for one or two companies (or individuals) interesting in sharing our facility. Prices approximately £195 per person.

MARINE CARGO INSURANCE

From January next year, providers of Marine Cargo Insurance will need to registered with the FSA.

FREIGHT RATES
Rates from Europe remain relatively stable. The weak dollar and high oil price has meant the introduction of currency and fuel surcharges on several trades. From the Southern Hemisphere and especially Australia. However, reefer rates have hardened considerably following increased demand for Australian meat products. Indications are that that further rate increases will follow later this year.

REEFER AVAILABILITY
Generally surpluses exist in Europe, exceptions perhaps being Spain, Italy and Ireland. Heavy demand for Meat from South America and Australasia means supplies of equipment there are under constant pressure.

Oct 2003

DATA LOGGERS
We remind Clients that we can provide a range of temperature recording devices should they feel the necessity to indepedently monitor transportation conditions. Available in several forms, from basic one way disposable units to all singing all dancing ones capable of download onto a PC they can record conditions such as relative humidity as well as the carraige temperature.

SUPPLY OF REEFERS AND LONG TERM REEFER RATES
We have witnessed a general hardening of reefer rates on the majority of trade routes throughout the last 12 months. Even so many rates, especially European export rates remain some 30% below those of three or four years ago. Demand for reefers remains buoyant and there are equipment shortages in several European Countries. Where rates have remained depressed we have seen lines shipping containers empty to areas of the World where demand exceeds supply and where shipping rates are significantly higher.

We would expect the hardening of UK export freight rates to continue throughout next year, particularly perhaps to the USA where we forecast a 25% increase. With regards to the Far East the conference does have plans for a continued restoration of rates, possibly on January 1st, April 1st and September 1st, but whilst this trade remains relatively depressed as far as reefer exports are concerned (with imports far outweighing exports) we expect any implementation to be patchy and below the levels the Lines would like.

Sep 2003

RATE INCREASES

As part of their on going rate restoration programmes, Lines are generally advertising freight increases effective 1st October to reefer traffic. Though increases vary from Shipping Company to Shipping Company and to individual destinations they can be summarised approximately as follows for 40ft reefers

USA usd400
FAR EAST usd300
WEST AFRICA £250

Other trades remain stable or increases are smaller. This year has seen several attempts by all Lines to restore rates to 2000 levels. Market conditions have been more favourable to Lines this year with many trade lanes operating at capacity levels and so imposing these increases has generally been sucessful, and perhaps justified. We would hope that 2004 would see a more stable market place enabling a greater deal of confidence on forward selling. Should you have rates about to expire and if you have not received updated rates or indications please do contact us before quoting.

CHELTENHAM 2004.
We would be pleased to hear from any Companies or Individuals interested in sharing our Hospitality Tent at Cheltenham for the 2004 Festival. (click here for details". The in reefer leisure page put CHELTENHAM 2004 and the following "advert"

CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL 2004

TUESDAY 16TH MAR CHAMPION HURDLE DAY

WEDNESDAY 17TH MAR QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE DAY

THURSDAY 18TH MAR GOLD CUP DAY

Hospitality package includes, Club Badge and use of private chalet in Tented Village with TV, nearby Tote etc. morning coffee, Buffet Lunch, afternoon tea and inclusive bar.

Tuesday or Wednesday £195 per person

Thursday £245 per person

Guinness Grandstand seats (if required) £30-00 per person/day

Reefer 90s have been taking Customers to Cheltenham for many years. Usually we would take about 25 over the three days, mostly over Tuesday and Wednesday. The chalet can accommodate 24 or more and so we offer space to Companies and individuals who want the comfort of a private facility but, like us, do not have sufficient numbers to justify hiring the whole shebang.

We have found that a buffet style lunch offers greater flexibility than a formal sit down as too many tables and chairs tend to get in the way !. Bar wise we tend to pre-order beer, wine and soft drinks and any spirits in miniatures. So a day’s itinerary may resemble:

Chalet available from 11-00 am for morning coffee

1300 -1400 hrs Lunch

1630 hrs afternoon tea

1800 hours chalet closes.

Bar available all day

Our experience suggests that guests usually wish to explore the various parts of the Course independently and soak up the Festival atmosphere and so tend to use the Chalet facility as a base, or place of refuge where refreshment can be easily accessed and where the Tote and toilets have fewer people in the queues !. For a greater view of the actual racing you can pre-order reserved seating in the Guinness Grand Stand situated adjacent to the main grandstand and overlooking the final fence.

Should you wish to share in this facility or need further information please do contact us. If you have any specific requirements then Cheltenham can usually accommodate them.

REEFER CONTAINERS FOR SALE.
We can always access 2nd hand reefers but at this point in time have some particularly good units, suitable for shipping and storage, at a very reasonable price and available in the UK. "Container Sales" See CONTAINER SALES.

NEW AUSTRALIAN REEFER BOXES
We have commenced trials with Super Freezers in Australia. These containers capable of maintaining extremely low temperatures and with rapid pull down capacity may be ideal for shipments of ice cream and products requiring similar carriage conditions through hot climates. Their light weight construction too could offer additional payload benefits, especially when they become more generally available in the Northern Hemisphere.

REEFER AIR
We are very keen to expand our portfolio of refrigerated air freight shipments. With access to all manner of packaging and refrigeration agents we are confident we can supply the ideal environment for the most temperature sensitive cargoes. Please contact Gordon Curran for details.

FREIGHT RATES VOLATILE
We experience continued upward pressure on freight rates world wide as Lines attempt to reverse the last few years trend. During this period, and until a form of stability returns it is important that you seek an update on any old information you may be working on.

MARINE INSURANCE PREMIUMS
We are pleased to confirm that the vast majority of marine insurance premiums have been maintained at last years level. This in addition to underwriters widening the level of cover.

CAP GOODS GO NES
Many of you will be aware that the clearence of CAP goods is now required electronically. As with the NES system introduced last October, this new procedure has had it's teething problems. especially with multi line entries. she will hate me for saying it, but Elsa is available to offer assistance and advice to those Customers having to get to grips with the new system.

ON-LINE BILLS
As is becoming the norm these days we have had to, and continue to embrace the World of On Line business. We shall never replace your daily contact at the end of the telephone by one of those multiple choice menus, but by booking on Line, and procuring some documents On Line we hope to improve the documentation flow to our Customers. Where we have used these methods to obtain and distribute bills of lading we can indeed see an improvement in speed and accuracy.

2003 MILDEV
Congratulations to Team Liberty in winning the 2003 MilDev Cup by the narrowest of margins - just one match out of the 24. The drubbing they received last year, when Team Reefer won by a record 12 points was certainly avenged. Thanks to all for attending and making this years event another resounding social success.

REEFER AIR
We are very pleased indeed to welcome Gordon Curran to our Team. We have been working with Gordon for many years in his previous employment within the air freight forwarding industry, developing our own specialist air cargo business. The time is right to bring air freight well and truly under our own wing (no punn intended) and we wish Gordon every success as he consolidates our position as experts in the transportation, by air, of temperature sensitive cargo.

WELCOME TO KATY MARSON

Katy is our new shipping administrator looking after bookings and documentation. Part of her porfolio is to further develop our I.T. systems to improve the accuracy and turnaround time of shipping documents. We welcome her aboard and wish her well in her new environment.

FAR EAST RATE INCREASES
Nearly all Lines have increased freight rates to Far East destinations as part of their on going rate restoration programme, generally in the region of usd250 per 40ft reefer. Should you be uncertain of current rates please do contact us.

KATY MARSON
We are pleased to welcome Katy to our team. She joined us on the 24th February and will be handling bookings and documentation. We wish her every success within the Company.

WEST AFRICA
Lines are intimating that they will introduce rate increases to West African Ports in April. We are resesting this increase which we feel is justifiable only on dry cargo boxes but ask our Customers to double check rates with us before pursuing new business.

USA
Shipping rates have been increased quite significantly over recent months and further increases are planned. To be fair rates to (and from) the U.S. have been eroded over the last 2 years and current increases still leave them below a "viable" level.

IRISH REEFER SITUATION
There remains and extreme shortage of reefers in Ireland and we request maximum notice of bookings. On average it is taking some two weeks to cover demand as we rely on containers be repositioned from the UK or the NWC.

BAF
The levels of BAF on all trades continue to rise.

USA EXPORTS
We remind Customers that recent legislation requires us to lodge export details at least two days prior to vessels departure. Failure to do so will result in short shipment.

CHELTENHAM

HAPPY BIRTHDAY REEFER 90S AUSTRALIA
Feb. 2nd 2003, Happy Birthday to Reefer 90s Australia - One year old today. Peter has written a review of the first years trading on the Australian page

INCREASED RATES TO FAR EAST
Shipping Lines advising of rate increases to Far East ports as part of their rate restoration programme. Initial indications suggest this could be as much as usd250 per 40ft reefer. This combined with increasing fuel surcharges and possible surcharges should the situation in the Gulf worsen is not brilliant news for exporters. We will endeavour to keep Customers informed of developments.

ON LINE BILLS
We are pleased to report the successful trial of "on line" bills. Hopefully within a few months the majority of shipping documents will be raised directly from our offices thus improving the turn round and accuracy of documents.

NES
Well this is truly up and running now. We do encounter problems (or challenges as Elsa refers to them now) especially with CAP goods and the changes (improvements?) to the system that that are imposed from time to time. We were trying to set up a discussion page to incorporate a list of problems and answers or FAQ and ask our visitors to comment. Suffice it to say we have not had the time or inclination but we do invite you to talk to us so we can broaden our experience.

MARINE INSURANCE RATES HELD
We are pleased to confirm that underwriters have extended our terms (in fact have improved of some of the wordings) for the year ahead. If you would like to discuss your Marine insurance requirements please do contact us.

November 2002

UK SHORTAGE OF REEFERS
For the first time in a couple of years we find a shortage of 40ft hc reefers on some trade lanes. We expect this situation to remain for a few weeks yet and would ask Clients to book as early as possible during this period.

NEW CUSTOMS PROCEDURES

The new CHIEF system for exports went live on 27th October 2002. Despite several months of preparation we still got a few surprises, but thankfully did manage to get everything shipped. Registering is a long winded process and without specialist software each submission must be an individual entry and is therefore quite time consuming. Until our clients familiarise themselves with the new procedures we expect that we shall process more export entries than is usual. Should it become obvious that demand for this service will be on going then we shall of course invest in the necessary soft ware. It is interesting to note the parallels between this new system and that already established and therefore more advanced in Australia .

Elsa will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

NEW WEB SITE LAUNCHED

EXPORT REEFER RATES

Reduced export opportunities, mainly in the meat sector following the foot and Mouth outbreak generally resulted in lower reefer rates during 2000 and 2001. Over the past 12 months Lines have attempted to impose several rate increases to restore rate levels but were doing so at a time when the reefer market remained relatively depressed.

Lines have achieved rate increases on dry cargo volumes but dry container rates did hit ridiculously low levels prior to the proposed rate restorations, and these rate increases have been easier to implement as vessels on the major trade lanes are full. Current reefer rates on most trades are only slightly higher than earlier in the year and remain low compared with those of say 1998. Although we expect them to harden a little over the next twelve months it is unlikely that they will be fully restored for some time to come.

REEFER 90S AUSTRALIA PTY LTD
Reefer 90s Australia officially opened in Brisbane during February this year offering a full and comprehensive export service for reefer cargo. Please visit our Australian page for more details.

REEFER GROUPAGE
USA Exports - Reefer groupage services, directly from the UK States have been slower to develop than originally anticipated. We can however offer a good regularity of services by co-loading with our French partners.

MIDDLE EAST Exports - There has been a significant down turn in demand for reefer groupage to the Middle East Gulf, though we maintain a service for frozen goods by combining saty Dubai with Bahrain.

OTHER EXPORT AREAS - We are maintaining groupage services to several Far East destinations, and many of the Mediterranean or european Holiday Islands. Reefer groupage remains a challenge even 13 years down the line and we still welcome your enquiries.

AIR FREIGHT - We are pleased to see increased levels of traffic we move by air. Operations largely centre around Braintree or Stanstead in Essex where we receive cargo for packing and subsequent export. We offer a air freight services on a world wide basis.

NEW IMPROVED CROSS TRADE REEFER SERVICES.
We are pleased to report new services incorporating good transit times and competitive freight rates between South East Asia, The Middle East South and West Africa. We would very much welcome your enquiries.
